The art of ring stacking is all about creating beauty, dimension and rocking your own sense of style! It’s fun to channel your inner sculptor by blending rings that are meaningful and that work well from a design perspective. Form and function are both in play when it comes to building the ultimate ring stack. A range of ring styles make up the form but let’s focus on the functional aspect of a stack by breaking down the crucial role of spacer rings!
What Are Spacer Rings and Why Are They Important
Spacer rings are thin bands that can be all metal or made of metal with diamonds or gemstones. A spacer ring, sometimes called a “spacer band,” can be worn between stacked rings to create a small separation. They’re important because they protect delicate settings from rubbing and enhance comfort and longevity, while adding a subtle (or strong) design element to the ring stack.
Spacer Rings as a Functional and Fashionable Piece
From a function standpoint, spacer rings act as a protective barrier by keeping intricate settings, pavé stones, and delicate metals from rubbing against each other. If your rings don't fit perfectly, a spacer band can act as a gentle size reducer to help create a more comfortable fit. Spacer rings also help your rings sit evenly and securely on the finger.
Aside from their practicality, spacer rings provide a slim, minimalist design style that can add balance to a ring stack by incorporating different metals, textures, or finishes. Plus, they’re another way to personalize your ring stack!
How to Choose the Right Spacer Ring for Your Stack
Consider things like width and thickness, metal colors, and whether you want a diamond or plain band when choosing a spacer ring. These factors will differ depending on your existing stack, so choose what you love while thinking about practicality!
If you want a cohesive look, we’d recommend a spacer ring in the same metal as your engagement ring and wedding band. If you’re looking for a more playful stack, you can also mix metals, like yellow gold with white gold or silver.
However, spacer rings aren’t just practical—they can also be tailored to reflect your personality and style. Consider incorporating birthstones or engravings to add your own personal touch and create something truly unique to you.
How to Layer Spacer Rings with Engagement and Wedding Bands
Adding a spacer ring with your engagement and wedding band allows you to protect your rings while creating an interesting, customized stack. Spacer rings are often used between an engagement ring and a wedding band to prevent rubbing while ensuring that the rings are sitting evenly.
If you’re incorporating your engagement ring and wedding band with other rings to create a larger stack, the spacer rings will perform the same function (metal/stone protection) but they can also be worn on both sides of a stack to create symmetry.
Styling Tips for Creating a Balanced Stack
Creating a visually appealing and comfortable ring stack involves balancing ring sizes, textures, and metals while staying true to personal preferences.
Some prefer a mixed metal stack, while others stick to one metal. Feel free to mix things or go matchy-matchy! Combining varied profiles (flat, curved, contoured) will also add intrigue and dimension to your ring stack!
Avoid stacking too many thick bands which can make your finger feel bulky and uncomfortable. Balancing thin and wide bands will not only look cool but it’ll feel better too.
Experiment by layering your rings in different combinations and see which arrangement feels balanced and comfortable while looking great.
Simple Bands vs. Decorative Spacer Rings
Simple bands offer a minimalist, versatile look and protect rings without drawing lots of attention.
Decorative spacer rings – those with beads or fun gemstones - add sparkle, texture and an unexpected design element which enhances the style and personality of the ring stack.
If you wear a wedding ring daily, adding a decorative spacer band can allow you to switch up your look while protecting your favorite piece.
Care Tips for Spacer Rings
-
Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, chlorine, and acetone as these substances can weaken the metal. Similarly, avoid abrasive cleaners such as powdered cleaners and toothpaste, as they can erode the metal and alter the color.
-
Use only soft brushes as stiff-bristled or abrasive cleaning tools can scratch the metal.
-
Be mindful of thick lotions and creams. These can leave a residue on your jewelry, making it appear dirty and potentially leading to discoloration.
Preventing Damage and Keeping Them Sparkling
-
Good old soap and warm water! This method is classic and efficient. A soft brush is extra important as it’s a safe way to get in between small cracks where gross things settle.
-
A jewelry cleaner - like the DRD Jewelry Cleaner - also works, but there needs to be something to move the dirt away, that’s why a soft toothbrush is great. Combine water with the contents of one DRD cleanser pod in the eco-friendly jar, immerse your jewels in the solution, let rest for five minutes, then scrub with the gentle brush (that’s included) to remove any gunk, rinse, and blot dry with a soft cloth! The solution is good for several uses; however, we recommend changing out the water once it becomes murky. The system comes with two cleanser pods. [Please note this cleanser is not safe to use on pearls, soft stones or other gemstones].
